Egypt’s cabinet hailed Telecom Egypt’s move to obtain the new 4G licence for mobile services that is expected to improve the country’s telecommunication services, speed up internet and provide high quality services to citizens.
This helped push the biggest and the first telecommunications operator in the Middle East into the world of mobile services, it added in a statement on Thursday.
Telecom Egypt previously announced in a press conference on Wednesday that it acquired the country’s first 4G mobile licence at a cost of 7.08 billion Egyptian pounds paving ($797 million) the way for it to become the fourth mobile provider in Egypt. It had so far paid 5.2 billion pounds for the licence, 50 percent of which was paid in dollars. The rest will be paid over four years, the company told reporters.
Yasser El Kady, Minister of Communications and Information Technology,clarified that the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) was keen on pushing TE to join the other three mobile operators to acquire the licence so that they can provide services of the same quality to users. He further added that TE will be able to provide 4G services using its new frequencies once shows readiness since being the first company to sign contracts. TE shall also carry on providing 2G and 3G services.
