Egypt plans to raise domestic wheat output in the next three years, in a drive to boost self-sufficiency from 45 percent to 65 percent in 2025, said planning minister on Monday.
Minister Hala al-Saeed added that the country also aims to raise its domestic oilseed output to boost self-sufficiency from 3 percent in 2020 to 10 percent in 2025.
Russia and Ukraine have been the largest foreign suppliers of wheat to Egypt, accounting for about 50 percent and 30 percent of the North African country’s total imports of the grain in 2021, and the war has prompted authorities to act to find alternative markets such as India and France.
