Egypt Tenders for Cairo Metro Third Line – Phase III This Month

Egypt is set to launch the third phase of the third metro line project in a tender by the end of this month at an investment cost of EGP 15 billion.

Abdullah Fawzy – the Head of the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operations – stated that works on the first phase in the third metro line were finalized in February 2012, adding that the implementation of the second phase are underway which will stretch 7.7 kilometres from Abbasia to Haroun El Rashid in Heliopolis.

Egypt will be completing the second phase next April, 2014, according to the Egyptian official.

For the second phase, Fawzy said the manufacturing will be done by local railcar manufacturer Semaf –  affiliate of Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) – with Japanese Mitsubishi cooperating in the effort to supply the rolling stock of the line.

Cairo Metro, the first metro network in Africa, has been operational since 1990. The network consists of two lines, and a further two are planned.

It is worth mentioning that Egypt received EUR 940 million from the French Development Agency and the European Investment Bank for the third phase of the third metro line project.
