The Egyptian presidency has amended the presidential elections law, putting the changes forward Wednesday for public debate until 9 February.
Interim President Adly Mansour announced 26 January that Egypt’s presidential elections would precede a parliamentary poll. The decision accordingly required amendments of two key political laws: Law 174 of 2005 on presidential elections, and the 1956 law on exercising political rights.
Law 174 was drafted after former president Hosni Mubarak decided to amend Article 76 of 1971 Constitution, allowing direct multi-candidate presidential elections for the first time in Egypt.
Previous presidential elections entailed a referendum on a single presidential candidate.
The law was amended again ahead of the 2012 presidential ballot.
