Egypt Police Disperse Anti-Hezbollah Rally Outside Lebanon Embassy

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Egyptian security forces outside the Lebanese embassy in Cairo on Sunday evening dispersed an Islamist protest against Lebanese-Shia resistance faction Hezbollah’s ongoing support for Syria’s Al-Assad government against an armed insurgency.

A small number of Egyptian Salafists, mainly from the ‘Guardians of Sharia’ group, participated in the protest outside the embassy.

Demonstrators demanded that President Mohamed Morsi halt what they described as the “normalisation” of relations with Shia-Muslim Iran and to allow Egyptian jihadists to join the fight in Syria.

The protest was eventually dispersed by force after protesters shot off a number of fireworks, injuring a police conscript assigned to secure the embassy.

One protester was reportedly arrested by police.
