Egypt had imported Israeli textile products – as pursuant to the Qualifying Industrial Zones (QIZ) protocol – in the amount of around EGP 187 million during the period from January to October 2013, according to official data compiled by the Egyptian Foreign Trade Sector of which Amwal Al Ghad has obtained a copy.
To qualify for customs-free entry to the US market, Egyptian QIZ products must contain 10.5% of direct and relevant inputs from Israel. This explains Egypt’s total size of textile imports from Israel which were worth EGP 287 million during 2012.
It is worth mentioning that Egypt starts negotiations with the US partner, seeking to reduce the Israeli inputs from 10.5% to 8.5%.
