Egypt’s government and highest religious authority extended their deep condolences to the victims of the ‘terrorist incident’ in which the Shia Ali Ibn Abi Taleb Mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia was attacked by a suicide bomber on Friday.

The attack resulted in the death of at least 21 and left more than 50 being treated for injuries, according to Reuters.

A statement by the Egyptian Foreign ministry and Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb strongly condemned the attack.

“Egypt stands in solidarity with the Saudi government and the people in the face off the brutal terrorism,” spokesperson for the Egyptian FM Badr Abdel Ati said in the statement.

El-Tayeb also stressed “the sanctity of blood and the holiness of houses of God” and warned people “not to be deceived by people igniting sectarian strife schemes.”

The Islamic State group says it was behind the deadly Saudi mosque bombing.

A suicide bomber from the group attacked the mosque wearing a bomb under his clothes during Friday prayers, a Saudi interior ministry spokesperson told AFP.
