Egypt’s government postpones celebrations marking the 25 January revolution in mourning for Saudi King Abdullah, cabinet spokesman said on Friday.
Similarly, the interior ministry said it would call off its celebrations of police day, also on 25 January, as the country declared a week of mourning for the late monarch.
Abdullah, 90, died in the early hours of Friday morning and was succeeded by his brother Salman.
Egypt’s President Abd El-Fattah El-Sisi has reportedly planned on cutting his to Switzerland short to attend the funeral. However, he could not fly on Friday due to bad weather, state news agency MENA reported, but is expected to fly later.
El-Sisi is in Switzerland attending a global economic forum.
The late monarch was one of El-Sisi’s closest regional allies, offering him vocal support when he came to power following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, and providing Cairo with cash aid and petroleum products.
