Bomb Kills Officer In North Sinai

A blast caused by an explosive device in North Sinai’s Sheikh Zweid Road killed a military officer Saturday afternoon.

The restive and underdeveloped Sinai has seen an upswing in militant violence since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, with regular attacks killing dozens of security personnel.

Egypt has poured troops and armour into the region while waging a sustained crackdown on Islamists — principally Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood — elsewhere.
