Asian markets fell as new coronavirus cases jump outside China

Shares skidded in Asia on Monday after reports of a surge in new virus cases outside China. The decline followed a sell-off Friday on Wall Street.

South Korea’s Kospi 180721, -3.87%   dropped 3%, while the S&P ASX/200 XJO, -2.25%   in Sydney lost 2.3%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng HSI, -1.79%   dropped 1.5% and the Shanghai Composite index SHCOMP, -0.28%   lost 0.3%. Benchmarks in Jakarta JAKIDX, -1.28%  and Taiwan Y9999, -1.30%   fell by more than 1%. Japan’s Nikkei was closed for a holiday.

The S&P 500 SPX, -1.05%   fell 1.1% to 3,337. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.78%   fell 0.8% to 28,992, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq COMP, -1.79%   lost 1.8% to 9,576.

Travel restrictions, business closures and other efforts in China aimed at containing the spread of the virus have begun to disrupt supply chains and sales prospects for Apple AAPL, -2.26%   and other big companies.
