Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A new report prepared by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows Africa has huge prospects for future economic growth through renewable energy.
African countries are currently witnessing the highest economic and population growth rates as six of African countries out of 10 are among the fastest growing emerging economies. The population of Africa is expected to double from one billion to two billions by 2050.
The report says the decision makers in Africa have two options: either to focus on costly fossil energy that pollutes the environment or harness huge potential of renewable energy.
Director General of the IRENA Adnan Amin said that the African continent is witnessing a major shift and there are unprecedented opportunities for exploitation of renewable energy to drive growth and improve the lives of millions of people across the continent.
He added that the agency is ready to play its part in helping Africa to move towards a better future that benefits the countries of the continent given great potential offered by the renewable energy.
