Egypt with its Arab, regional, and international weight can play a prominent role as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council (UNSC) regarding the Arab causes in general and the Palestinian cause in particular, said Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas.
In an exclusive interview with the Middle East News Agency correspondent in Ramallah on Saturday, Abbas hailed Egypt’s weight, adding that he has no doubt that Egypt will work vigorously to support Arab causes in the UNSC.
He also said that Egypt is part of the quartet committee, which was formed at the Arab League to follow up the Palestinian cause.
Consultations are underway with Egypt to raise the Palestinian cause in the UNSC, he said.
He hailed President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s efforts to resolve the Palestinian issue and other Arab causes.
He voiced hope that 2016 will be a start for a political and diplomatic action inside the UN and the international organizations to resolve the Palestinian issue.
The Israeli side did not voice readiness to deal with any solutions to end tension and attain peace, he went on to say.
Abbas also said that he is ready to attain reconciliation with Palestinian Hamas movement by forming a national unity government and then holding elections.
