BREAKING: 1 dead, 3 injured after shots fired near California polling station

A US election polling station in Azusa, California is in lockdown after shots were fired nearby.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Gustavo Medina said one person was dead on arrival, two people were airlifted to hospitals and a fourth was being treated. He did not say whether they  had been shot, the Associated Press reported.

Few details were released about the shooting, which occurred after 2 p.m. in the residential neighborhood.

Azusa police asked people to avoid the area near Fourth Street and Orange Avenue and urged residents to shelter in place.

Azusa is approximately 48km outside of Los Angeles.

The number of people injured and extent of the injuries has not been confirmed.

CNN reported about 30 people inside a polling place at the nearby Memorial Park North Recreation Center were not allowed to leave the building, but can still vote while they wait.
