CAREEM’s initiative with the Egyptian Food Bank results in $4000

by Ghada Ismail

In the span of one week, Careem raised 20,000 Egyptian pounds in donations made directly through the usage of Careem’s car-service application. In their initiative to fight hunger by going into partnership with the prestigious Egyptian Food Bank (Bank El-Ta’aam), Careem has also announced that it has matched the funds it’s raised, donating a total of 40,000 pounds.

“The application has allowed every user to individually take part in the Egyptian Food Bank’s project to feed the needy throughout the holy month,” says Careem’s General Manager Hadeer Shalaby. “Within a week, we had 2,000 of our riders use the option in the application, which allowed them to donate 10 pounds per ride. I want everyone to know that through the money they raised, they’ve taken part in feeding more than 440 people during this holy month.”

The money donated by Careem’s clients through each trip has gone directly into the 90 pounds packages prepared and distributed by the Egyptian Food Bank.

Ahmed Youssef, Careem’s Marketing Manager, announced that they are going to send the Egyptian food bank double what they have raised; “What many people don’t know is that our name, Careem, originated during Ramadan and comes from the word Karam, which means generosity. Whatever we raised, we have equally matched in funds”, says Youssef. “We want to stay true to our name, especially during Ramadan.”

“We managed to get all these donations in just the first week in Ramadan,” says Shalaby; “we are very optimistic on the amount of money we will have raised by the end of the month.”

Donations through Careem’s car-service application can be made until the end of Ramadan, and Careem will announce periodically the funds raised as they grow. “We want people to know that the more rides they take with Careem, the more donations they can make, and the more families they can feed. It’s all about our riders – we depend on their generosity to make this initiative work,” says Shalaby.

Rides are available in both Cairo and Alexandria on all normal economy rides, whether via instant or later bookings, through the third car-type option on the app called ‘Egyptian Food Bank’. This car type offers the same pricing as the usual economy ride, and choosing it will automatically charge an extra EGP 10 that goes directly to the Food Bank’s initiative. By choosing this car type, riders have immediately donated to the cause.

Youssef explained that generosity is embedded deep into the company’s philosophy, and their partnership with the Egyptian Food Bank is a part of their CSR program to help and contribute to the society in which it operates – both to the people and its employees alike.

To date, Careem has provided thousands of employment opportunities to Egyptian youth, and a stable income to countless families. The job opportunities offered by Careem come at the crucial time when unemployment rates are at their highest, allowing people from all walks of life to observe an honest and alternative employment opportunities. At the same time, the company provides an essential service to the community, where hail-rides are on high demand.
