Coalition jets bomb Houthi supply camp in Sanaa

by aya salah

Saudi-led coalition warplanes carried out airstrikes Saturday on Yemen’s al-Arqoub camp in eastern Sanaa, according to residents and eyewitnesses.

The camp was being used by the Houthi group as a supply center for its operations in the eastern province of Maarib, sources said.

Saturday’s attack was the first against al-Arqoub camp since the launch of Saudi-led airstrikes against Houthis one month ago.

The camp belongs to the 7th Brigade, which is commanded by the son of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Houthi leaders could not be reached for an immediate comment.

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when Houthi fighters overran capital Sanaa, from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced the end of a fierce month-long air campaign that had targeted positions belonging to the Houthi group in Yemen.

The following day, however, the Saudi-led air coalition resumed airstrikes, stressing its right to strike Houthi targets “if necessary.”
