547 Brotherhood Supporters Face Trial In Upper Egypt Saturday

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Some 547 supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi attended their first trial session Saturday on charges including inciting violence and belonging to a terrorist organisation.

The session, held at Upper Egypt’s Minya governorate, was brief with the court refusing to listen to the defence’s arguments.

Defence Lawyer Khaled El-Komy told Ahram Online that Minya Criminal Court refused to look into a request by the defence to recruse itself and, instead, set Monday’s session to issue its verdict.

Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters have been opposing Egypt’s current authorities since the ouster of Morsi 3 July 2013 following three days of mass protests demanding early presidential elections.

Almost all leading Muslim Brotherhood figures have been arrested and face trial. The group was listed as a terrorist organisation in late December.
