Nilesat Investigating Jamming Of El-Bernameg

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Egypt’s satellite operator has said it is investigating why Bassem Youssef’s El-Bernameg show was jammed for the second week running.

NileSat has followed up complaints about the jamming of El-Bernameg on MBC Misr, the company said in a statement.

The company revealed it had presented a complaint to the International Telecommunication Union regarding jamming problems in the past and that it had discussed the matter at international conferences of satellite operators.

It said it was doing all it could to prevent the situation happening again.

“It is better not to rush to conclusions without waiting for the result of our investigation to determine the source of the problem,” NileSat said.

Technical difficulties — not political interference — had caused the delay in determining the jamming source, the company added.

Over the past three years several NileSat channels have been jammed for political reasons, especially those broadcasting from Libya and Syria, as well Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya news channels.

A group called the ‘Egyptian Cyber Army’ has claimed responsibility for jamming Youssef’s show.
