The IOC has given Egypt one year to bring its sports legislation in line with Olympic standards.
Egyptian and Olympic officials met in Lausanne to review the situation in the country. Egypt has been embroiled in unrest since the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi in July.
The International Olympic Committee says the sports law in force in Egypt since 1975 “needs to be updated and revised to make it fully compatible with the basic standards of the Olympic movement.”
New draft legislation should be completed within six months. The whole process, including adoption of the new law, should be done within a year.
The IOC says, in the meantime, the Egyptian government “will not interfere in any manner whatsoever” with sports federations and clubs.
