Gunmen Attack Damietta Police Station, No Casualties

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Gunmen riding a red truck opened fire on Damietta police station early Tuesday and immediately escaped leaving no casualties, according to Reuters Aswat Masriya.

Investigations are currently underway to identify the perpetrators and reveal the reasons behind the assault.

A precedent to Tuesday’s attack was the onslaught Monday on a bus transporting Central Security conscripts west of the northern Sinai city of Al-Arish, which left eight injured along with a civilian.

Attacks on police and security personnel – which have sharply risen in Sinai since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July following mass protests demanding an end to his one-year rule – have now spread to other governorates across Egypt.

The recurrent attacks surged in the aftermath of the forced dispersal by security forces in August of two large pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo and Giza. In one of the most violent incidents, gunmen attacked Kerdasa police station in Giza, leaving 11 security personnel dead.
