by Yomna Yasser

In a new technological achievement, Alfa, the first Lebanese mobile operator managed by Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding (OTMT.CA), announces that it has successfully completed the 1st Lab Test on the 4G-LTE technology on its network. During the test, unprecedented & record speeds of up to 100 Mbits/sec were achieved.

In parallel with the success of this 1st Lab Test, Alfa will be launching soon a 3-month Pilot Phase on the 4G-LTE technology on 20 4G-LTE existing sites installed in Beirut. The Pilot Phase will include 300 participants, and it will span across a geographical area covering the administrative area of Beirut. The commercial launch of Alfa’s 4G-LTE service will take place in 2013.

Commenting on this technological achievement, Alfa Chairman & CEO, Eng. Marwan Hayek said: “the success of the 1st trial on the 4G-LTE technology is a huge leap forward and an introduction to a promising stage for the mobile sector in Lebanon that we are looking forward to, where internet & download speeds will be six folds faster than current speeds, and in addition, users will be able to access more advanced services such as watching an HD movie online.” Hayek continued: “We consider the Pilot Phase on the 4G-LTE service, which we will launch in November 2012, an important step aiming at gathering the feedback of users which will allow us to provide the best user experience when launching the 4G-LTE service commercially.”

This step comes to further reiterate Alfa’s commitment to offering the most advanced mobile technologies to its subscribers, while being always a pioneer in its services, especially that Alfa, managed by Orascom Telecom, was the first mobile operator to complete the first test on the 3G+ technology in April 2011, and the 1st operator to launch the service in Lebanon on 25 October 2011.
