At least three missiles have been fired against the Sinai Peninsula in northeastern Egypt, a security official and witnesses report.
According to the sources, the projectiles targeted Sinai’s central part overnight, causing massive explosions.
No casualties have been reported as the region is sparsely inhabited and it is still not clear who was behind the unprecedented attack.
Egyptian police and military forces have been deployed to the area to investigate the strike.
Israel invaded and occupied Sinai during the Tripartite Aggression in 1956, as well as during the Six-Day War of 1967, according to Press TV.
Egyptian forces liberated the peninsula in 1982 after the Tel Aviv-Cairo Peace Treaty of 1976.
